Cornell Woolrich

Narodil se v roce 1903 ve Spojených státech amerických, v New Yorku. Jeho velkým vzorem byl F.Scott-Fitzgerald. Kvůli psaní opustil i studia na Columbijské univerzitě. Velice čtený a oblíbený se zejména v Americe a Anglii stal po vydání románu Děti z Ritzu v roce 1927. tento román mu vynesl rovněž uznání v podobě literární ceny a zaměstnání scénaristy v Hollywoodu. V roce 1930 se zde také oženil. Překvapující to bylo hlavně proto, že Woolrich byl homosexuál. Toto manželství také dlouho nevydrželo a Woolrich se vrátil ke své matce. Woolrich se stával uzavřenější. Psal v noci a ve dne spal, zachutnal mu alkohol a v okolí vyvolával chorobné hádky. Zemřel opuštěný, ale jako milionář. Své peníze v závěti odkázal Columbijské univerzitě na fond pro začínající spisovatele.
Na počátku své kariéry se věnoval společenskému románu. Skutečnou popularitu získal však až psaním napínavých příběhů pro časopisy, kterým se věnoval po roce 1934. Kolem roku 1940 začal psát tak zvanou Černou sérii, jelikož se v názvech opakovalo slovo black a autorovi se začalo říkat Black Woolrich. V této sérii vydal šest příběhů. Inspirace má však autor dostatek a vydává i pod pseudonymy George Hopley a William Irish. Pod jménem William Irish také vydáváv roce 1942 jeden ze svých nejlepších příběhů, u nás známý jako Dáma měla oranžový klobouk.
